Gary W. Sworthwood, 82 of Rantoul, passed away at 5:59 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2020, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Private family funeral services will be held. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Rantoul. Baier Family Funeral Services, Paxton is handling arrangements.

Gary was born June 8, 1938 in Owosso, Michigan the son of Wayne and Viola Nolph Sworthwood. He married Carole J. Adams February 13, 1960 in Chesaning, Michigan. She survives.

Along with his wife, Carole, he is survived by two daughters Kim (Frank) Tomcala of Owosso, Michigan, Karen (Kevin) Gosser of Williamstown, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Ryan (Holly) Tomcala, Justin (Sarah) Tomcala, Karissa (Jana) Leonard, Kandis (Ron) Bowman, Kalli (Brody) Farrar and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Gary graduated from Corunna High School, Corunna, Michigan in 1957. He was the owner/operator of Gary's Barber & Styling, Rantoul for 44 years retiring in September 2014 and CK Almonds, where they sold roasted almonds at area events for many years. Before moving to Rantoul, he lived in Streator and Ludlow and served as Ludlow mayor for ten years.

Gary enjoyed raising standardbred harness-racing horses and also boarding horses at the farm.
