Marvin "Sarge" Barger, 81 of Paxton, died at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at the VA Illiana Health Care System, Danville.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2018, at Baier Family Funeral Services, 406 E Pells Street, Paxton with Rev. John Hauck officiating. A private family burial will be held at the Danville National Cemetery.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Marvin was born June 9, 1936 in Wilmington the son of Russell and Orlyn Harsted Barger. He married Mary Langhoff February 12, 1955. She survives.
Along with his wife Mary, he is survived by a daughter, Robin (Gregg) Hart of Paxton; 2 sons, Russell Barger of Bradley, Justin (Angela) Barger of Paxton; two grandchildren, Arielle Hart of League City, Texas, Lacie Hart of Paxton; a sister, JoEllen (Jack) Murphy of Pontiac and a brother, Gary Barger.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Marvin graduated from Streator High School. He served in the United States Air Force 1957-1981 and retired as a Master Sergeant. He spent time in Saigon, Hue, Danang, Bangkok and Pleiku. After his retirement from the Air Force and until Chanute Air Force Base closed, he worked Civil Service as an aircraft carrier instructor. He then worked for the PBL School District as Lead Bus Driver for 15 years and the GCMS School District for the next several years.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Paxton. He enjoyed elk hunting, restoring cars, reading books and animals especially cats, birds and squirrels.
