Obituary

Virgil L. Niemann, 90 of Buckley, died at 5:38 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2026, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Buckley with Rev. Mark Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Buckley with military honors.

Visitation will be two hours before the funeral service from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Thursday also at the church. Baier Family Funeral Services, Buckley is handling arrangements.

Virgil was born February 29, 1936, in rural Buckley the son of Lawrence and LaVerne Schuldt Niemann. He married Norma Livingston July 3, 1959, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Buckley. She survives.

Along with his wife of almost 67 years, he is survived by two daughters, Robyn Niemann of Desloge, Missouri, Kerri (Scott) Blicharz of Washington; three grandchildren, Emily (Kendall) Hengst of Davenport, Iowa, Allison Blicharz of Peoria, Christopher Blicharz of Chicago; one brother, Everett (Ann) Niemann of Corunna, Michigan and one sister, Sharon (Rick) Baier of Cissna Park.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Frances Niemann.

Virgil graduated from Buckley High School in 1954. He proudly served in the United States Army for two years and was stationed at a missile base near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Virgil farmed his family farm and retired after harvesting his 60th crop.

He was a life-long and very active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Buckley where he had served as Elder several times. He was also a member of the Buckley American Legion Byron A. Hickerson Post 432 and the Ford-Iroquois Farm Bureau. Virgil was past president of the St. John’s School board and a trustee of the Buckley Fire Department.

Virgil enjoyed music, welding, reading farm publications and his antique tractors.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church and School or Buckley Fire Department EMT’s.
