Reverend Walter Marvin Chellberg, 94 of Paxton, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 23, 2021, at his home.
Private family funeral services will be held at Augsburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, Porter, Indiana. Burial will follow in the Augsburg Cemetery. Baier Family Funeral Services, Paxton is assisting the family with arrangements.
Walter was born July 20, 1927 at St. Mercy Hospital, Gary, Indiana the son of Walter Frederick Bernard and Helen Johnson Chellberg.
He married Maxine Marcelle Hoy at Hessel Valley Lutheran Church, Chandlers Valley, PA on February 16, 1952. Maxine died December 30, 1979. He is survived by their children Carol Peterson (Husband, Randy) of Omaha, NE; Sandra Uden (Husband, Rex) of Paxton, IL; Pamela Golden (Husband, James) of Rantoul, IL; Mary Hernandez (Husband, Oscar) of Melbourne, FL; and David John Chellberg (Wife, Mary Kathleen) of Vashon, WA; 22 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren.
He married Mary Margaret Goodwin at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Delphi, IN on July 3, 1983. Mary Margaret died January 1, 2010. He is survived by 3 stepchildren; Jeffrey Goodwin (Wife, Lorna) of Fishers, IN; Marcia Adams (Husband, Mark) of Florida and Patrick Goodwin of Atlanta, GA; 8 step grandchildren and 7 step great grandchildren.
Walter was also preceded in death by his parents; sister, Eleanor Lindquist; brother, Paul Chellberg and nieces, Wendy and Robin Chellberg.
He graduated from Liberty Center, Chesterton High School, Indiana in 1945. In 1949 he received a B.A. from Augustana, Rock Island, Illinois and in 1952 graduated from Augustana Lutheran School of Theology, Chicago M, Div. His internship was served with Dr. Theodore Matson, Ebenezer, Chicago, Dr. Granger Westberg, Augustana Hospital, Chicago and Dr. Walter Carlson, Alvarado, Minnesota. Walter was ordained in Des Moines, Iowa on June 15, 1952.
Rev. Chellberg's parishes included Tarna Lutheran St. Hilaire, Minnesota concurrently serving congregations for Black River Lutheran in Red Lake Falls and Clara Lutheran in Deer River; Ebenezer, Chicago; Concordia, Chicago; First Lutheran, Princeton, Illinois; First Lutheran, Paxton, Illinois concurrent with Grace Lutheran, Rankin, Illinois; St. Peter's, Arenzville, Illinois; St. Matthew's Delphi, Indiana; St. Peter's, Camden, Indiana; Shepherd of the Hills, Evansville, Indiana; Prince of Peace, Lafayette, Indiana and Faith Lutheran, Otterbein, Indiana.
Walter was an avid reader. He enjoyed traveling, jigsaw puzzles, paint by number, tennis and volleyball.
