Wayne E. Mathis, 88, of Rantoul passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

Born January 2, 1938, Wayne was a well-known and respected high school biology teacher who spent many years inspiring generations of students with his love of science and learning. He earned his undergraduate degree from Illinois State University and later completed his master's degree from Illinois State University and later completed his master's degree at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Teaching was more than a profession for Wayne—it was a calling, and he was beloved by many of his students and colleagues.

In addition to his career in education, Wayne also was a local businessman. He owned and operated Super Cube Ice as well as The Liquorette/Hideaway, becoming a familiar and friendly face to many in the community.

Outside the classroom and his businesses, Wayne enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. Each year he looked forward to fishing trips with friends to Canada and Alaska, traditions that brought him great joy and lifelong memories.

Wayne was also a devoted member of the Gibson City Corn Belt Shrine Club, where he valued fellowship and took pride in supporting the organization's charitable mission.

He is survived by his son, Lawrence Mathis; brother, Robert Mathis; and his two nieces, Cathy Mathis and Carol Mathis.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 14 at Baier Family Funeral Services, 406 E. Pells St., Paxton. Burial will follow immediately after at Rankin Union Cemetery.
